5000 Watts is a 1-night only electrified experience at the nexus of art + tech. In partnership with Intel, we're building a team of geeks, makers and techies to cover Sacramento with a sea of illuminated installations.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the next generations of makers in partnership with Square Root Academy.

Why 5000 Watts?

Square Root Academy is a nonprofit on a mission to engineer equity in STEM education. We are dedicated to educating underrepresented youth on the fundamentals of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) while emphasizing collaborative learning, innovation and academic excellence.

We work exclusively in Title I schools and low-income communities, targeting disengaged student populations - girls and kids of color - to expose ‘scholars’ to the growing fields of STEM at no cost, while promoting creativity, leadership and academic excellence. Throughout the 2018-2019 academic year, Square Root Academy was able to reach over 3,000 scholars with our STEM programming. Out of our participating scholars, 96% were minorities and 42% were girls. On average scholars in our STEM Enrichment Series at their school improved their overall math and science grades by 30%. These are figures we are so proud of! But we still have a lot of work to do. We are working to expand our programming into two more Sacramento area school districts for the 2019-202 academic year, with the goal of reaching 5,000 scholars, and we need your help to do it.

The Equation is Simple:

    5,000 Scholars + Equity + STEM Education = A Brighter Future

Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

An educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.

A support system that helps students and individuals understand and apply math and science content, the foundations for success in college and careers.
